ResoGat is Back!

After a two-year Covid hiatus, we are happy to announce that ResoGat will return this year.

ResoGat 2022
July 6-9
Holiday Inn Express
1700 Winkler Street
Wilkesboro, NC 28697

ResoGat is an annual meeting of Resonateurs, or enthusiasts of the dobro, also called the resonator guitar. Our 2019 gathering welcomed more than 100 resonateurs as well as players of other instruments.

The gathering began as A Gathering of Resonateurs, an informal event held at In the Woods, the property of the John Dopyera, Jr. family. John’s father and uncles were the inventors of this instrument, and the name is taken from their name, the DOpyera BROthers. The name Dobro had the added advantage of meaning “good” in the Dopyera’s native Slovak language. The event moved to its current location in 2005 and became known as ResoGat.
While the event has a tradition of spontaneity and a relaxed environment of society and jamming, there are other exciting events, workshops, special guests as well as a vendor room with plenty to keep the dobro enthusiast busy.

As in the past, there is no fee to attend the event, but donations will be accepted to help with the expenses. While we are suggesting a donation of $20.00, it is more important to us that as many people attend as possible. Do not let the donation stand in the way of your coming. Donations will be collected at the event.

To register for the event, please send an email to resogatnc@gmail.com with your name and your size for the annual t-shirt. The t-shirts will be available for purchase at the event.

Call the Holiday Inn at (336) 838-1800 to make your reservation. Ask for ResoGat to get our special rate of $94/night. Rooms are available with one king bed or two queens. There are a limited number of rooms at this rate, so it would be best to book early! Our rooms are being held until June 13. After that, reservations will be accepted on a space available basis.

For further information or updates, please visit http://www.resogat.org or ResoGat on Facebook. You may also send an email to resogatnc@gmail.com if you have a question.

I've dropped off the grip at RH lately. Sorry about that.

I wanted to give a (not-so) quick update about ResoGat.
This is going to be a really good event this year. Here are a few highlights so far:

  • Leroy Mack of the Kentucky Colonels is our Honoree of the Year. He is really excited to be coming all the way from California for the event. And we are excited to have him.
  • Matt Leadbetter will be here for the first time. He will have memorabilia and stories to share of his father, Phil. Who knows? He might even have something to say about himself, too.
  • Over 100 registered guests so far. In fact, we have used up our entire block of rooms at the hotel, but I think there is still room for others to make a reservation. I'm trying to work that out now with the hotel.
  • Five luthiers will be there. Two of these, Byrl Murdock and David Koebel, are first-timers to ResoGat. Two are returners, Peter Mosco and Stephen Griffis. The fifth I can't tell you about yet because I am still ironing out some details. But you will want to see him.
  • Jerret Hall's Slyde Compartment and Charlie's bars and capos (as well as Charlie's brother's guitar/banjo capos) will be there.
  • Some great auction items including lessons/subscriptions from various instructors, a custom box from Jerret Hall, two bars from Ron Tipton (unless I conveniently slip one into my guitar case before we arrive!), and others that I am sure I am missing.
  • Bobby Wright will be available to do setups.
  • Lou Wamp will be available for lessons.
  • Lots of other things I'm forgetting.
  • And lots of jamming.

All in all, we have an exciting time planned. My only problem now is that I am really ramped up, and I have to wait a month!

I will be at ResoGat on Friday and will be bringing a few items to sell. I will be dropping off a guitar for Bobby to set up Wednesday evening and can leave the items then if requested.
I have a new handmade leather dobro strap crafted by Ken Hooper plus a leather capo holder that attaches to your belt and a leather holder that holds a bar, picks and a capo, all crafted by Ken Hooper. None of these items have been used. I may bring a few other small items to sell. Todd just informed me there will be a table for those who have items to sell. He asks for a donation of an item to raffle be donated to show our support for ResoGat and all they do to prepare for this event.
I look forward to seeing all my old friends and to meet lots of other reso lovers.
I grew up in Wilkesboro so if anyone needs any info, I may be able to help.
See you soon!

Just booked my rooms at the Holiday Inn. I'll be bringing some goodies to sell too I'm sure. Excited to attend.
