Are you looking for new, or used?

And can you share with us why a Vintage R or an Appalachian?

As far the Vintage R, that model is out of production at Beard. There is a note about this on the Vintage R page on the Beard website. I think with Paul's new line of RadioTone guitars, some existing models have been shelved either temporarily or permanently. The RadioTone in the R body would likely be the closest thing to The Vintage R.

Since you are new and your first post was brief, we have no idea how much you know or what you don't know, so I apologize if you are already familiar with the content of my post.

The original Appalachian business was owned by the late Tom Warner who sadly passed away from Covid awhile back.

Several years ago he brought on Tony Langley and trained him in his guitar building methods, so Tony took over the business. Prior to his passing Tom Warner built a small number of guitars under his last name as he was edging toward full retirement.

As far as the current iteration of Appalachian resonators, Tony Langley is full speed ahead and frequently shares photos of his finished guitars online. You shouldn't have any problem in being able to order a nice Appalachian from Tony.

If you order an Appalachian from Tony you may have to wait a bit, but it's worth it. If you want to find a used Appalachian online, you may have to wait a bit , but it's worth it.

I'm interested in those two due to their sound and my budget, which is around ~$1500. I've seen those used guitars going for less than that and also more. In that case, I'm hoping for finding a used guitar. Can tony build a new Appalachian for around that price? The radio standard series is well above my budget range. I found a resophonic 57 for around $2000 used, which again, is a bit more than I want to spend especially since I think I prefer the Vintage R tone. It's more focused and with more bite from what I'm able to discern.

Sehy squareneck (rosewood/spruce) is for sale on the Steel Guitar Forum for $1500.00. I never played one, but it looks nice, so you might look into feedback from owners of these.

Howard has given these a thumbs up for "best bang for the buck".

No worries. I thought maybe old age was taking a toll.

Howard is a great guy! We used to meet up in Texas for the Steel Guitar Jamboree.

Share war stories ;-)

I have a Mango Sehy and it is a great instrument. The Rosewod would be a steal.

Cool.  That would be more in my budget.  Can you tell me more about your Sehy?  There's very little info on these guitars and I have not been able to find a single demo and sound example.  I would really like to hear how it sounds before considering buying it.  I really like the sound of the vintage R which to me seems to be mix of vintage and modern.  Im not looking for the most powerful modern sound, nor a vintage honky sound either.

I got the Mango Sehy and a. Beard MA 6 the same day. It was a struggle to decide which one to play. I would say the Sehy has great balance and tone. I paid $1800 for it 11 years ago. Mango is very similar to koa wood. I wouldn't hesitate getting the rosewood.

I don’t know how to put a link in. Just go to Reverb and punch Appalachian in the search, you will see if.

I was curious about this guitar myself and spent way too much time searching on Reverb, but so far came up empty on an Appalachian for around a grand.

As far as simply typing in "Appalachian" on Reverb, mostly what comes up are dulcimers and autoharps.

I did find this Appalachian on the site by googling, and it looks really nice. The seller is asking $1850.

I have no idea how you went back and found it again Eddy, but I went back  to Reverb and typed Appalachian Reso which are the first two words and the result was "0 Listings."

That is a very good buy. Serial number 58 so Tom had a lot of guitars under his belt at that point.

I have played exactly two Appalachians so I'm anything but an authority. They  were both maple with lower serial numbers so earlier in Tom's building says.

We did an A/B  at a  jam years ago against my maple Clinesmith and they weren't in the same league, but it was still a quality reso for the money, and  I would not have hesitated to buy one if I didn't already have a nice main axe.

One had really nice inlay work on the neck and I recall the guy bought it new at the time for under $1800 so dollar value vs. another independent luthier with considerably higher pricing it was a  very good deal.

Mark,
It may of had something to do with being a Canadian sale. Your search may have not brought you to it. Yes it’s a great deal especially with all the extras. I would jump on it if I were looking for sure.

thank you very much! Considering this very highly and messaged the seller. Please don't swipe it from under my nose! lol.

Also, what do you guys think of this guitar: I was pretty close to buying it before the Appy came up.

Which guitar is nicer? Has anyone played a 27 deluxe and an appy?
