I have a 2000 Dobro DW90 14 Fret that needs a neck adjustment.  I need to lower the action on the instrument.  I'm looking for a little guidance before I take it apart.

If the neck is in good shape you need a new setup with inserts/nut.

So, a neck "reset", something remedial or just an action adjustment?

The neck is in great shape, straight with a working truss rod. It’s the angle that needs adjusting.

I heard that all I need to do is loosen the nut and shim the neck. I’m not sure that is true, and I’m not really sure what to expect if I take it apart. That’s why I’m asking.

Can you walk me through the process?

I leave resets to luthiers. I do believe that on this guitar you'll have to drill out the dot markers where the neck is over the body in order to get to the screws to take the neck off.

It's been a while since I observed the process.

Yeah man, you can see there's a shim block under the neck stick, between it and the block, if there's any space between the neck heel and body then shimming it more should work. If there is no gap at the heel then it needs a proper neck reset, best left to a pro.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I brought the Dobro to the luthier last week. I’m hoping for a great “finger style” set up when I get it back.
