Since the dobro is not a mainstream instrument, finding arrangements of songs for it is a big challenge. So IMO it is important to develop a "MUSICAL EAR." The use of sheet music and tab is a kind of "Monkey see, monkey do" experience. In order to "Get under the hood" I suggest using the method described here in order to understand the concepts behind the notes. A while back I posted a topic on BANJO HANGOUT regarding all this for that instrument, you will find it here:

I have put up the Dobro fingerboard map showing the interval locations here on this post. BTW the map just shows the key of G but the hope is that eventually the knowledge gained can be applied to any key desired. Start easy, just playing the scale up thru the numbers on the left chart. Then start playing one of the songs provided which just mixes up those numbers in order to make a melody. The chart on the right adds different ways to accomplish the melody using alternate locations which could aid in making bar-moves easier.

Ok, in my formative years , I read " real music " playing Brass instruments . ( The kind you blow thru , plays one note at a time only )

Now ( mumble decades later) playing things with strings , and potentially multiple notes at same time . I feel I would have been better off as a newbie , not reading conventional music .

I have a passing aquaintce with Nashville , are these two additional different number systems ?

The numbers on Rick's chart are the numbers for a scale in G. You'll have to adjust for other scales.
