I posted some information and pictures on 24 November 2022 of a travel Dobro I had made for my own amusement - thanks for the encouraging comments. I thought "that's it, I've done it, I won't make another". However....,..there was wood in the garage and bits and pieces of accumulated hardware, so I decided to make another for fun. This one has a mahogany body and neck with a 29 fret fretboard, like Gibson solid steel guitars on which the body shape was based. The spine of the instrument was made from five pieces glued together.

Once again the cone is a 6" uke biscuit style one, but inverted with a spider and connecting screw, which avoids overloading the cone with the pressure of 6 strings, and seems to make a more Dobroish sound. The faux Fishman pickup is two shortened undersaddle uke pickups sandwiched between each ebony cap and maple saddle, all supeglued. It's wired through a preamp which happily fits nicely in the contours of the bass side. Once again the sound is very pleasingly acoustic with a bit of eq tweaking, and sounds even better though my Aura pedal.

The spider is of unknown provenence, I got it years ago on Ebay, and cut it down to the required diameter. I superglued thin brass shims to the tips of the legs so it only sits on the outer raised rim of the cone - there are two. The spider on the first travel Dobro was fabricated from brass and initially buzzed because it was resting on both raised rims - I found that lifting it slightly in this way stopped buzzing.

The flat cover plate was cut to my specification by a local laser cutting company - I had 10 made at the time as it was not much more expensive than one - and I fabricated the removable palm rest from brass. I had both components chrome plated by another local company.

It sounds pretty similar to the first one, there's a link to a demo video in the discussion following my original posting in November.

That's definitely it.....possibly!!

I like it! Looks like a nod to the ported Wolfe reso.

Well spotted. The width was too narrow for a conventional looking screen, and the Wolfe inspired holes were a good alternative. The metal rings are chrome plated halves of 15mm diameter eyelets.

Makes me wish that my wood working skills were what they used to be. Nice job.
