Hi there, recently got this lap steel guitar that has a brass Dobro body with a custom square neck by Bryan England (from Custom Inlay in Kentucky). He said they got a bunch of Dobro bodies from Gibson just after Gibson bought OMI, so I'm guessing the body is from around the time of the acquisition. Because it doesn't have a Dobro neck there's no serial number, so I was curious what could be gleaned by the body itself. Any info on what I should look for in order to date it? It's brass with a cool paint job. I added that missing string, it could use a little polishing but sounds really nice.

I'll probably let it go pretty soon -- just started learning slide on an electric, would like to focus on that -- but wanted to try to learn more about it (and resonators). Curious if it's typical to have a piece of leather under the tailpiece.

Can't help with the body dating, but it sure is interesting. I would otherwise consider the paint and inlay "busy" but together it really works!

Here's a photo of the headstock. Very nice inlay work. I agree that it seems busy but the paint job is actually pretty subtle in person.
