bluegrassunlimited.com/article...as-story/

This came from Bluegrass Unlimited in 1991. There is a lot of detail about Jerry's early guitars and experiences.

That's a nice article. My, how things have changed, gear-wise since then. We're lucky to be players in this era, IMO.

That's the most I've seen him discuss his upbringing in an interview. He still plays around NE Ohio regularly. We grew up in the same town, although he's older and I didn't know about him until the early 90s (I was already living in CA by then, and didn't follow bluegrass at that time...). But the hometown pride is still evident. People he knows (classmates and such) have come up to me after some of our local gigs wanting to discuss Dobro and their Jerry connections.

I had this issue but it's long gone.

I wonder when Bobby Wolfe actually conducted the interview? Weird that there's no mention in the article of Tim Scheerhorn and his guitars, yet here is Jerry holding one on the cover.

I'm about 90% sure that's the 'horn he was playing at the Father's Day Bluegrass Festival in Grass Valley, California when I saw him live for the first time in either 1990 or 1991. He did a pre "Skip, Hop & Wobble" set with Russ Barenberg and Edgar Myer. They brought out Maura O'Connell for about four songs on vocals.

I was able to meet him after his set and he gave me the rundown on Tim's guitars along with his phone number. I was drooling over that axe. When I called Tim and he told me the price was $1700-$1800 I was pretty bummed out.  I was a partner in a small business at the time, my wife and I had three little rug rats at home, so ordering a Scheerhorn wasn't in the cards.

Interestingly enough, though the Scheerhorn isn't mentioned in the Bobby's article, there is a separate article in that issue about Tim Scheerhorn. That would be a neat read from his early days. I remember back in the early 2,000s I could have bought a "Horn" for about two grand.

$2K for a 'horn in the early 2000's?

Was it new or used?

I was kicking around getting on Tim's list in 2004 but ended up not doing it, because it was going to be a three to four year wait. He was backed up with a long wait list. At the time the price was $5K.

If you're talking a new guitar back then - that they only  increased in price by $200-$300  a full decade after  Jerry showed me his 'horn in '90-'91?  Something doesn't sound right - or it was a very unique opportunity where the rest of us had no access.

My ‘91 R body was a little less than $2,000. At that time the only choice Tim offered was a light, medium or dark finish.
