Square neck (lap style) or round neck? Which YouTube version are you keying on?
I posted a beginner's solo square neck version of Ripple several years ago, but it’s in Open D. Also, I capo'd to G to get a higher register. I’m sure it’s doable in GBDGBD tuning, but you’d lose the alternating bass rhythm as demonstrated in this cut.

Anyhow, if by chance this is your reference, I'd be glad to tab it. But it's of no use unless you want an Open D version with a square neck.
Cheers.

I think Grateful Dave trucked on outta’ here.
Here’s the Ripple tab. Nothing fancy, but it should get you 90% of the way there, and pretty well matches the video version I had posted. I capo'd 5, but tabbed it as if in open position.

Working on it as we speak.
Have fun with it! Key is to keep steady rhythm/bass beats with the thumb, and play melody notes on top 3 strings with index and middle. (I didn't specify fingers on the tab...)

Originally posted by Grateful DaveThanks so much @jcdobro. This is a great start for me. It will get me practicing. What Trax did you use that I hear in the background? I can do this. Thank you.
Glad it helped! I made the backing track on Band-in-a-Box. I'll see if I can dig up the mp3 and PM it to you. Good luck!
When you play it at jams, don't forget to remind folks that there's an intro break. It drives me crazy when people call the song then start singing right off. That intro break really sets the tone nicely.
And for the advanced version- There's a documentary out there on the making of the American Beauty LP. At one point David Grisman plays his mandolin part for Ripple, including fills that were left out of the final mix. Perhaps some of those can be emulated.
