I posted this question somewhere a couple years back and seems like I got a reply that answered my question but for the life of me I can't find it. So here goes (again):

I have a late OMI Hound Dog, the cheapest Dobro ever built (but I really like it!). The serial number is easy enough to figure out, 4 for the body style, the unit number, then 93, then H for Hound Dog. There is a penciled date inside of 4/17/93. The mystery is that between the unit number and the year, there is a small "R". I jokingly said it must mean "reject". Someone told me what it likely was and I can't remember. Round neck? Could it be that simple?

I _believe_ that the "R" signifies a replacement neck.

I've seen a few in the (Beard) shop over the years.
