Hi, my sister had a Dobro made by Jones. The # on it is 6578. I don't know how true this story is, but what we were always told as kids is: RQ Jones made 2 Dobros for Josh Graves to pick from. Mr Graves made his choice & the other Dobro (we called it, affectionately, "The Halloween Jonesbro") was bought by my dad at a music store for my sister. Can anyone tell me anything about #6578?
Here is an archived thread from 2019 to give you a bit of information:

There are other threads in the archives on Jones guitars. You can do a search on the left side of your screen, look for the magnifying glass icon.
Some had serial numbers while others didn't. It doesn't seem like Rudy was very meticulous as far as record keeping and there has never been an online forum to my knowledge that compiled his serial numbers (or lack thereof).
Pictures would help - a lot!
Now the you have entered a post as a new member, scroll down past where you write your text - you'll see an area where you can upload photos, three per post. Make sure you're in Rich Text. Add photos from different angles in new posts. It's easy to do from your phone's photo app. If you run into issues we can coach you through it. It's better to upload them here in the thread rather than on your homepage.
This will be your best shot at finding information here on the guitar, with R.Q. Jones we're not talking about a company like C.F. Martin where detailed records for nearly every guitar have been kept going back many decades.

Regarding RQ serial numbers, I agree with Mark that they’re probably not very helpful. Photos of the guitar, wood, accoutrements, inlays, etc. would probably tell us more. I have played many Jones’, including the two most famous ones and have never noticed a serial number but that could be because I was delirious at the time....in fact I may still be...
Rudy was my grandpa’s first cousin so I always wanted a coveted Jones! I bought one a few years ago and I believe numbers were U2277 I assumed it was the #2 of February of 1977. So I called Rudy and he said he couldn’t remember how he numbered his resos. We discussed maybe the U being an Uncle Josh model. So I guess his number system will forever be gone!
