Are these guitars well thought of?
I was thinking of buying one

I'm no authority on Nationals, but if I were to buy one I'd rather have a modern version (which began in 1989) than one from prior to World War II. Several years ago while on business on the central coast of California one morning I was able to get a great one-on-one tour of the small National factory in San Luis Obispo. It was apparent to me that they do quality work and they take a lot of pride in it. 

I think the Estralita is a really nice model. 

There are some  nice biscuit bridge guitars being made in China these days that are imported and aren't too expensive, but when I have been able to play a real National the difference to me has been pretty obvious.

Newer Nationals are great, the usual stuff applies when buying an almost 20 year old instrument and there was a time when they had issues with the finishes flaking, but I reckon that would've happened by now, if it was gonna do that so, yes, excellent, well regarded instruments.
