I always thought you sweetened “to taste”. 
I use the Dbh sweetened tuning mode to get my thirds to sound good.
My (possibly controversial) real world approach.
$12 headstock tuner with scale marked by LEDs. Eyeball the needle halfway (or near halfway) between center point and -20 cent mark. This gives me -8 to -10 cent B sweetener, plus or minus a few cents. Good enough for a multi-player jam or full band configuration.
Other factors (bar placement, bar pressure, bar tilt/angle, vibrato, etc) have WAY more impact on pitch than a few cents +/- accuracy on the tuner, IMO. Not to mention environmental factors (temp, humidity, etc.) causing variability.
If I’m recording, or doing solo arrangements, I’ll get much more precise on sweetener. Otherwise, above works fine by my ear.

Sorry…mechanical engineering background here. Advanced and retarded are often used to time an event.
Agree 100%. If I don't have the Peterson close at hand I just flatten the 3rd by ear and see how my ear likes it (bar at 3rd fret) against the open 1st string and 3rd string at 4th fret.
It's all the same but, not as elegant as "dbh" ;-)
