And what would that diffence be? 

The difference may well be if your music performance requires you to plug in and/or if you already own or plan to augment an equipped guitar with the auxiliary gear required to play your music.

My question was what difference would the lack of a PU would be to a potential buyer.

I would be okay with a pickup as long as it didn't interfere with my ability to change out the cone, but I likely would never use it. I wouldn't seek out an instrument with a pickup.

If we're talking the Fishman Nashville, no it does not restrict access to the cone. I think you've answered your own question?

I think most of us do not use one.

They likely do not change the value of the guitar much.

Frank Harlow used to tell the story of the disagreement between he and Gene Wooten over this.

Frank in his usual self said to Gene, I will go out to the shop and put a pickup on a two by four for you if that is what you want.

However, Frank in later life, offered a pickup if you wanted one. So I guess he gave in.

When I played Gene's guitar I do not remember it. It was not Goldy. The cherry one.

First, I don't see myself buying a high end Dobro. But, if I did, I wouldn't be looking for one with a pickup. Now, if one were offered at a ridiculously low price with a pickup, I wouldn't be bothered by its presence. So...I don't need a pickup or a new dobro...but...

The reason I asked (above) “what kind of pick-up”? is that I have three guitars that came with pick-ups and one that did not,  that I had Beard install a Nashville system in.

One is a very high-end dobro and had a schertler in it—which I find worthless and don’t use.

Another was a moderate price import dobro with Schertler, which I uninstalled, and replaced with a Fishman Nashville PU.

Another is a high-end Beard with Nashville PU and a Hip Shot Double Shot—and I purchased that guitar specifically to be played electric.

Of all those, I only bought one because it came with a pick-up. The others I bought for their sound, playability, and guitar lust.

Having a pickup would make a slight difference to me, because I plug in a substantial percentage of the gigs where I use a dobro. My history has been that if an instrument doesn't have the Fishman I will likely get one installed at some point. Overall I doubt that it makes much if any difference in terms of resale value.

It wouldn't be a decider. I've always added pickups, but only because there was never one there already.

None of my resonators have pickups, so obviously not an issue for me. I've thought about getting a Krivo or Myers that I can use on multiple guitars, but I haven't really needed one.

I use a small Audio Technica condenser mic with a small gooseneck which does quite well, but I also use it with multiple instruments (round + square) as I didn't want to buy 4 Fishmans. If more volume is needed than it can handle, I'll switch to console steel/Telecaster.

I have yet to find a pickup that sounds awesome on a resonator… factory installed or aftermarket alike. I’m more interested in how the instrument sounds naturally. If I need it amplified I’ll worry about that later and expect it to be a compromise.

Have you tried a Tonedexter?
