I heard Jaelee Roberts’ “Im Putting You Out Of My Misery” and had to look up the reso player. What a talent! https://youtu.be/XZF9gaLWnys?si=iu4lukEutP9nPOSm

Yea….no matter what instrument he plays. Listen to him and Sierra Hull on “Taxland” and see if you can keep track of who is playing mandolin!

Good to see you're catching up skydog. I think Justin has won IBMA Resophonic Guitar Player of the Year six out of the last eight years.  But alluding to what Eric wrote above it's a little confusing to me that he has won all of those trophies - not that he doesn't deserve them - but he's a multi instrumentalist, I've seen him play live with a few different groups over the years in San Francisco, and if it's a 12 song festival set - he might play dobro on three or at most four songs.

Perhaps he gets a lot more Nashville session work on dobro than I'm aware of and that's why he's picked up so many  reso awards.

Or it could be what I think of as "rubber stamp syndrome."  When it comes time to place your vote with an organization like the IBMA, people might just go who they are familiar with from one year to the next.

If there’s any recorded music from his short time in Blue Highway I would love to hear it. I have seen them with their other 3 Dobro players (Rob Ickes, Gavin Largent & Gary Hultman).

I have seen him perform with Sierra Hull a couple of times. That's a talented couple!!

Actually, Gaven Largent was the winner in 2024. But yes, Justin has been acknowledged for a bunch of years since 2019 (Phil Leadbetter).

My associates and I, the IBMA professional membership give due consideration in the 3 step voting process.

But heck, it's a process. Tony, Grammy and Nobel prizes also have a process that begins with membership.

Here is another fine example of Justin on dobro from a  2016 show in Portland with his amazing wife Sierra Hull, and Ethan Jodziewicz on bass. He has played that R-body Scheerhorn for many years.

And superb technique with the picking and bar hands.

Is that a Scheerhorn or a National?

As Mark mentioned above, Justin played a Scheerhorn R body as his primary guitar for many years. That would not be a National.  More recently he also plays a Beard….at least for traveling.

Adding to what Eric wrote, the guitar is the original body shape of the Tim-built Scheerhorn, referred to as as an  R-body  (for Regal from the 1930s, but deeper)  or a Standard body.

Around 1998 Tim built his first large or L-body guitars.

The Nati-horns are all replicas of the L-body.
