considering picking up either an 2013 Tom Warner Appalachian or a deco 57?
any advice or opinions??

It's like asking "Do I want cake or pie for dessert?" Both are fine guitars. I had a Tom Warner cherry Appy that was great sounding and well balanced. Beard guitars are top line. I've heard this Jerry Douglas guy plays a Deco 57...
Can you play either before purchase? that may answer your question...
Yep, The 57 is Jerry's "Earl" guitar.
The other consideration is that the Deco was "birthed" within driving distance of Mark! :-)

Are we comparing apples to oranges in terms of price?
I think I’d miss the warmth of mahogany.
I second the playing before you purchase, if possible. I tried out someone's Beard (I forget the model) and it was a solid great sounding instrument, but wasn't "Me".
Of course, the best non-financial solution is to get both.
I have had both guitars. I sold the Deco 57 because I wanted a more "modern" sounding guitar. I like the volume of the Deco. It was loud and a little brash, so it was a good choice for jams. The Tom Warner Appalachians can be a little hit-or-miss. I have a 2015 model that is a spruce/rosewood and I will say that the build quality is very good. I would love a mahogany version of his guitars. Both are likely good guitars, but they will have very different tonal qualities. If you like the sound of "modern" players like Jerry Douglas and Andy Hall, I would go for the Mahogany.
