I join reso related forums to primarily discuss playing the instrument.
I consider myself to be primarily an ensemble player, meaning that 90% of my playing is in support of a singer. Let's face it. Within any given tune be it a song or instrumental, how much of your time is actually spent soloing?
You know the answer..."not much". Even on dobro instrumentals you typically share the spotlight with other soloing instruments. The rest of your time is spent playing rhythm or backup.
Heck, even on my own projects I'm typically in a support role, which I enjoy a lot. I may post one of my exceptions later but for now....
Sea of Heartbreak is off of my 2024 project, "Music Daddy" and features one of my favorite singers, Ms. Bianca Bentz. It's sparse and expressive, something the reso guitar excels at.

Ahhh..
What you are hearing is a technique that Mike Auldridge used a lot in his ballad playing. In order to achieve that tone he/I moved the right hand 4-6 inches left of the palm rest with the hand "floating" over the strings and then muted aka "palm blocking" with the edge of the right hand.
In this case (Key of D) I'm going from the D (I chord) transitioning to G (IV chord) through a D7 (I7) chord. I'm picking strings 2 & 3 at the 7th fret (D) and sliding down to the 5th fret (D7) before ending up by playing finally against the G (IV) chord. Along with the above right hand technique it sounds like a mellow/fat chord along with the other instruments.
I'd note that if I would have decided to play a chime/harmonic instead, that phrase would have been pitched a whole octave higher.
Thanks for the question.
