I just listened to a resonator with a magnetic pickup mounted in the body near the neck, playing some blues (not slide) and was impressed. It would be very easy to add a floating humbucker to the end of the neck.
Anyone done this?
Yes. Every conceivable PU mount has been tried. I would guess that, commercially, Beard has done the most variations. Check out some of their models, past and present.

Wraps around the end of the neck, secures with small holes you won't see.
Likely the best surface mounted pickup - and it's pretty popular - is the Krivo Resophonic pickup.
CheapRes - I'm guessing you're talking a round neck reso and not squareneck?
When you join up here it's a huge help to let us know what style you are playing.
Lap style squareneck players tend to be pretty specific in terms of amplified sound, round neck bottleneck players not as much.

Yep, round neck
I would tell you it's too tall and will hit the strings but you'd probably argue, so yeah, get it.
