Hello to all you resonator guitar players! My name is Al Jirik, I'm 72 years old and live in Wichita Falls, which is located in north central Texas 20 minutes south of the Texas-Oklahoma border. This is farm and ranch country, though we do have an Air Force base, an Amazon depot and a few decently sized employers. My wife Nancy is a retired schoolteacher, and together we are enjoying our "golden" years. I have significant (but stable) hearing loss, and I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in July. I haven't played any music for several years, but I'm anxious to get back into the swing of things while I still can.

I played dobro for 10 years until my 60DS became part of a cash/trade deal for a new banjo. I've been playing the banjo for 40 years. I'm really excited to return to the dobro, not only because I love the sound but also because I may be able to play it longer than the banjo as my health deteriorates. Right now, I'm in Stage One PD with only a tremor in my right hand (which medication has all but eliminated at this point).

I've pretty much decided to purchase a Recording King RR-60-VS. I've listened to it on YouTube and to my ears it sounds great. I'm impressed with its quality, and it (sort of) fits my budget. I was also glad to see that The Dobro Book by Stacey Phillips is still in print, it will be fun to learn from that source again.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself. It will be interesting to poke around the Hangout and pick up info, tips and tricks. BTW I am living proof that you CAN teach an old dawg new tricks!

Right on, I recommend the Hawaiian steel book by Stacy as well, it's mostly for high G tuning too.

Welcome, Allan! Sorry to hear about your Parkinson’s diagnosis. I’m battling back from a spinal cord injury that occurred about two years ago. A different deal than Parkinson’s, but they both present their challenges. Music is therapy. Good luck with your journey!

Welcome Allen! 69 years old here and been playing dobro for over 40 years. Had a non-cancerous brain tumer removed about 10 years ago, only effects my standing and walking so I play sitting down alot. The first book I bought was the Stacy Phillips book and I used it to learn the basics, still have it. Once again Allen welcome!
