Rollers for strings 1 & 2 the same size groove? I failed to look when I re-strung, but looking later, they appear to have the same size groove near as I can tell. I don't think they are mixed up, but if the same size, it wouldn't matter.
Reason for asking, I have a tendency to hang my Lap Dawg on the first string when going forward across the strings. I have never had this issue on the dozen or so other std. nut, normal tail resos I've owned and played.
I haven't actually measured the nut roller housing, but eyeballing says it's level across the neck.
Anybody else have this issue or just moi?
Looking at Hipshot’s engineering drawing (link) - while the wheel/groove dimensions aren’t specified, it appears #1 and #2 grooves have identical geometry and vertical positioning. An email or call to Hipshot would confirm this.
My guess would be they did this to accommodate a range of string gauges, as the #1 string can vary from .016 to .018 on stock string sets.
interestingly though, if you are "submarining" the edge of the bar into string #1, that implies string #1 sits higher than string #2. But the opposite would be true if the Hipshot drawings are accurate, meaning the top of string #1 would sit slightly lower than string #2, by a couple thousands of an inch.
What string gauges are you using? What I HAVE noticed is that a .018 #2 string can deflect downward and be downright plunky under bar pressure, particularly in D tuning. If you're using a .018, you may want to try a .019.
I use roller nuts on all my resonators, so I may also be making subconscious micro-adjustments of bar pressure in my playing to avoid this issue altogether, as I don't experience any issues.
Thanks for the drawing Jamie. I'll check out those mounting dims when I get a minute. I agree, looks like 1 & 2 are the same roller. Makes sense....only a couple gauges difference generally.
I'm using the std. D'Addario 16-56 set. EJ 42's, I think it is.
Actually, I haven't had opportunity to play out with this axe, just one short jam.
I'm pretty lazy, so sitting in the recliner with a prop under the keyhead end. It's possible I'm leaning the guitar in toward me with the way I sit, but I've played several different guitars the same way with no hang ups. I'll consider your suggestion re: gauges. Thanks.
