My band wants to do The boy who wouldn't hoe corn, I have listened to Jerry Douglas on the Allison Kraus album and I believe he is in a D tuning I hear the 6 string as a D. Any one know the tuning on this?

I read on the you tube post that this song is in Dm.
YouTube - The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn (the real soggy bottom boys).

Standard D tuning for dobro or weissenborn is (low to high) DADF#AD. A regular set of dobro strings (like the D'Aderrio J42s or the GHS 1650s) can be used for this tuning.

JD uses DADF#AD quite a bit on the allison krauss stuff.

Yes he does use D tuning quite a bit. Once I analyzed some of his music with her. I have already worked out an arrangement for the "Boy who wouldn't hoe corn " in D tuning I know I don't have all the nuances that Jerry has but it sounds pretty close. If you have listened to the tune it speeds up with the banjo and dobro pretty much dominating, since I play both banjo and dobro in the band I don't know how I'll pull that one off.
Thanks again,
Phil

There is some discussion about this tune in the archives over at the JDBB. The consensus there is that the studio version is played in D tuning and the live version is G tuning. A great tune either way!

Thanks Dave,
I'll have to check both out. I don't usually play in D tuning and with only 1 dobro it is a pain to change tuning while playing out. Until I spring for that second dobro of course.
