Anybody know anything about SX brand squareneck(s) from Rondo Music?
rmodel - Posted - 01/11/2011: 15:45:08
I think the "curly Malapoka" wood or whatever they call it is actually plastic. Well suited for an episode of El Kabong, I would guess. Then again maybe they are great. At least they are cheap. Better than the guitar hero video game.

First Michael, to the hangout. You will not find nicer more helpful people anywhere. That being said, brutally honest as well, as attested to by Bob. I think he's trying to steal my thunder. Enjoy yourself and have some fun here, we do. BTW is that the chupacabra on the wall behind you? That will make you practice.
Bob, El Kabong, this is hilarious. Mama bear and I were just talking about Queeeeks Straw the other day. We have a chihuahua that makes speedy look like a piker.

I learned to judge an instrument by the amount of people who are trying to get rid of them!
I get an E-mail every week from Kurt at Rondo to let me know whats up with him and a heads up on any deals he might have.
I asked him right after Christmas when he was going to put those sweet blond square necks on sale so I could save a buck and his response was that he was selling them so fast that he was forecasting a sell out before the end of the year.
Sure enough, three days later, he had sold out and had removed them from his website.
OK so in order to get those things built to his specs, he has to order a minimum order of them which is probably 500+ at the very least and probably 1000's.
So if they were junk, people would be scrambling to unload the ones that they bought just to get a cheap reso.....Right?
OK, so go out on the web and try to buy one!
Craigslist? E-Bay? Local newspaper?
You cant get an SX reso owner to part with one for love nor money and that speaks volumes about their quality.

Sorry if I ruffled any feathers but you may as well call a spade a spade. If you want to try a SNR to see if you may want to persue it further, by all means go for it. Heck I may even get one for my grandson for Christmas next year. That being said I seriously doubt that a professional musician would be happy with it for too long. If we all stop buying the products from Cha hina they may call in our national debt, then where would we be. Lighten up a little and smell the roses along the way. What was it that the Carter Family used to sing ? Keep On The Sunny Side ?
rmodel - Posted - 01/12/2011: 07:47:11
Hey Shivamoon, ran across this sound clip on you tube for a SX resonator, round neck not square. Sounds a little on the "tinny" side but could be the strings also. Might help

No ruffled feathers here. (You guys havent seen me get spun up yet!)
I was just trying to point out that the attitude of " All resos under $500 are unplayable junk" may not hold true and I was sharing my way of looking at it.
Every time a new guy asks about a sub $500 reso, the cork sniffers come out of the woodwork and declare it not worth the wait for the UPS truck.
I think Grizz is way off here thinking that SX owners are simply going to throw one in the closet because they wont be able to recoup enough of their investment.
If that were true then all the Rogue, Johnson, Lauren, Tyler Mountain, Savannah, Chicago River, Trinity Blues............would be in the closet also.
Its just human nature to hang onto whats working and try to get rid of whats not and I use my example all the time with other products.
I dont even know Kurt except as a good guy who cares about his stuff but if anyone wants to take the time to do a little research, you'll find that pretty much all of Rondos products are well thought of in the music world.
Go over to TDPRI and ask about Rondos Telecasters and see what answers you get!
Grizz - Posted - 01/12/2011: 10:57:45
Actually TC my statement was a query. I don't know how many they sold, why there is no secondary sales, pure conjecture. I do not want to start anything but I think it unfair to categorically say "cork sniffers" I am a proponent of "Buy American" if you have the money, no more, no less, and for that I have stated before and will state again I WILL NOT apologize. As far as me being "off base" hell it wouldn't be the first time and I am big enough to admit it. So there, how do you like me now. I added the part about the Reso's.
Come back for tomorrows show.
Here is a copy of an e-mail I got. Have a good laugh.
Sometime this year, we taxpayers may again receive another 'Economic Stimulus' payment.
This is indeed a very exciting program, and I'll explain it by
using a Q & A format:
Q. What is an 'Economic Stimulus' payment?
A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.
Q. Where will the government get this money?
A. From taxpayers.
Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?
A. Only a smidgen of it.
Q. What is the purpose of this payment?
A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a
high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.
Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China ?
A. Shut up.
Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the U.S. economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:
* If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China or Sri Lanka ..
* If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to the Arabs.
* If you purchase a computer, it will go to India , Taiwan or China ..
* If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico ,
Honduras and Guatemala ...
* If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea ..
* If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan ..
* If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock, it will go
to management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.
Instead, keep the money in America by:
1) Spending it at yard sales, or
2) Going to ball games, or
3) Spending it on prostitutes, or
4) Beer or
5) Tattoos.
6) Buying and American made Reso.
(These are the only American businesses still operating in the U.S. )
Conclusion:
Go to a ball game with a tattooed prostitute that you met at a yard
sale and drink beer all day! Then go home and play your Reso.
No need to thank me, I'm just glad I could be of help.

Mike I'm still trying to decompress from a 10 year stint on a gun site that finally deteriorated into NOTHING but juvenile BS every time someone asked a question even when it was obvious that the question was legit and someone really needed help.
Here we had a new guy with 2 posts who asked a legit question and immediately got bombarded by jokes while getting NO usable information.
I posted and tried to help the guy out by using an example of new sales compared to used ones coming back on the market and all of a sudden I'M the bad guy for interrupting the circle jerk.
I gotta go. My secretary is calling me up for something.
You boys play nice!
Grizz - Posted - 01/12/2011: 11:38:08
TC Maybe you should read his post on this thread resohangout.com/topic/12745/#243772 I for one enjoy the fun we have. There are other sites with "tight asses" running them, but to each his own. Did you read the posters bio, I did he is 65 and list's himself as an expert/professional. So that being said.................
shivamoon - Posted - 01/13/2011: 18:43:32
Thanks everybody! I have a somewhat better idea about SX now. ( I knew I saw a blond one that seemed to disappear.....) I've always played resos, but mainly old Nationals and Regals (round necks) I've been thinkin' lately of tryin' to learn Dobro ( the real deal: square neck! ) and I don't want to spend a lot just to find out I can't do it! I'm oft times thought of as a "Bluesman", which I am ( I've hung out, and learned from people like Lightnin' Hopkins, Rev. Gary Davis, "9 String Big Joe Williams, Sleepy John Estes, etc. to name a few....... check out my BIO here: michaellcastle.com/radioshows.htm ), but I have also sat around a kitchen and played all night with Buck Graves ( he was playin' the Dobro that Cliff Carlisle played behind Jimmy Rodgers!), and I'm just as "Country" as they come! So I have always loved Dobro ( met the Dopyrea Brothers once too! ), and I have a pretty good idea how it is supposed to sound. I hang out a lot on TDPRI Forum, so I do indeed know what they have to say about Kurt ( That's where I found out about Rondo Music! ) Don't know about no "Chupacabra", but that's very heavy African Goddess behind me.... Very Heavy Mojo! Thanks again!
Grizz - Posted - 01/13/2011: 18:54:28
OK Michael, you opened up a can of worms now. When are you going to post some video or MP3 your not getting off that easy. I LOVE the blues. I hope you don't mind the joking, we like to have some fun along the way. If I went too far, please accept my apology. BTW Chupacabra it the Mexican equivalent of the bogeyman. The way the photo was done I surmised you wanted it in there.

I have an SX roundneck, currently set up with a nut extension because I wasn't sure if I wanted to play lap-style or bottleneck, and I think it sounds pretty good. A friend of mine has an American-made Dobrp hounddog that I've played, so that is my only point of comparison, but I think the sx sounds nice and has a nice feel to it. Very "traditional" sounding reso, but the high end is very sweet. It does seem like it bottoms out on the lower registers though, but for under $200 to try out it is a good deal.
shivamoon - Posted - 01/14/2011: 09:07:25
Thanks andyboyman! It is nice to finally hear from someone who has actual experience with an SX Reso! That's one reason I asked the question..... My local guitar store has a used Regal ( RD-30 I believe... ) which is a round neck, for $200. I've wondered about just using a nut extender with that. The owner, who's also a friend, and a fan of mine, has the extender ( haven't "axed" him 'bout a Stevens Bar yet! ) That way I would have the "best of both worlds". If I can't get the hang of "Dobro" playin', I can always just use it as a round neck!
Square Neck - Posted - 01/14/2011: 16:26:07
Michael,
I checked out your radio site, good stuff!!
I'm a big fan of Mr. Cash (RIP) and if you like to dress in black as well, this is the axe for you...
losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/...6916.html
Not mine but I thought I would mention it (looks like it might be close to you). From what I've read the MK resos are a good bit better than other imports like Regals.
Plus it already has one of the best cones you could get, and with a spider bridge for that "old time dobro sound"
Plus everyone knows that black steels sound the best!!
BTW..Welcome to the Hangout!!
Good luck to ya!
<*)))>{
shivamoon - Posted - 01/14/2011: 17:27:23
Thanks Square Neck! Yeah, I just came home with a virtually brand spankin' new Regal RD-30, in Blue Sparkle! ( The guys on the Tele Forum will love it! ). I got it for the same price ($200), but a Benjamin of that was in an electric I had layin' 'round.... I would have loved a black one, but, bein' a Bluesman, and all.... it is the next best thing! I was already thinkin' of orderin' a can of black gloss from Stew Mac, but when I realized it was a "sparkler"
I gave up on that idea.
I'm north of the ( S. F. ) Bay Area, in the Sonoma Wine Country ( just bought the Regal from my buddy who has a shop in Napa, about 20 miles from me. ), so LA wouldn't have worked.
I'm havin' some trouble gettin' my show on my webpage... hopefully that will be rectified soon. In the meanwhile, it will be streamin' 2morrow, Sat the 15th from 5-7PM PST at:
sonomasunfm.com/
If you, or anyone else on the forum want(s) to send me your direct email, I'll put you on my "reminder list" that goes out every Sat mornin' ( dependin' on TIme Zone ) to my listeners around the world.
I do always dress in black when I perform, and Johnny Cash was my first idol, so good thinkin'! It's good to see Micheal Kelly makes one in black! I'll keep that in mind! Thanks for the tip!

I have one of those SX squarenecks. I bought it to begin learning to play when I injured my left middle finger joint (I play banjo, and was facing 6-14 weeks of joint rehab with middle finger permanently extended... couldn't deal with no music for that and my girlfriend asked me if I wouldn't be able to play something with one of them slide things, clever girl).
Long story short: If you want a cheap entry-level instrument, it's fine. You will want to replace it if you enjoy playing it, especially if you play with other people, and even more so if you play with other people without all those wires and speakers and things. It's not a terrible instrument, although it is obviously very cheaply constructed. I have no idea what the cone is inside. The mids and highs are not bad. Major downside is PUNY volume.
So for entry-level practice at home - go for it! If you're starting a band with some friends, try to find something a little louder. I am replacing with an imported Appalachian Reso. I know buying one of those from Europe I am not getting to touch it and bond properly before I buy, but I am simply trusting the reviews on this site.
