I heard one of these about a year ago, and it was right up there with my Beard Vintage R ( which I have since sold)

I have played some Wechters in the $700 range but they have a Rob Ickes model closer to $4,000. They sound like what you pay for as far as I can tell. Played a Scheerhorn. Very nice. Got five years to wait?

I've played one W/S, in a music store along with several other models. Ranking solely in terms of personal preference, which happens to track pretty well with price (all of these are actually quite good): Gold Tone Beard laminate; Gold Tone Beard solid mahogany; Wechter/Scheerhorn; Beard Vintage R; Beard R.
I've played two different Beard R's in the store, and they both were excellent--head and shoulders above the others.
BTW, Tim Scheerhorn has stopped taking new orders. Something to do with trying to retire.
El Dobro - Posted - 07/31/2008: 16:43:09
Tom, the Rob Ickes model usually runs around $1100 new. I've seen used ones on eBay in the $700-800 range. Excellent bang for the buck.

BDC1, Good to see you posting again, I've had a S/W for about a year now. I've got a red stained all maple model which I think sounds pretty good, but I'd like to get some of the experts opinions on this guitar. I need to start working on really learning to play this thing..

Hey Stelling man! Yeah I dont post much on the BHO, but this RHO has got me stoked.
STELLING MAN - Posted - 08/02/2008: 06:58:55
BDC1, From what EL DOBRO has posted, the S/W might be a pretty good choice for that price range guitar..

I know he can make a garbage can lid sound good, but here's Rob Ickes in action with the W/S RI model.

I just bought a W/S Elite L-Body.... a "not-so-frugal-horn" I guess would be the correct classification ? LOL

I play a W/S Rob Ickes. And it's a great instrument for any price. It can hold it's own against much more expensive guitars.

I own and play the Wechter-Scheerhorn 6510F shown in my avatar photo. I like it as much as any other resonator guitar out there.

BDC1, which WS are you considering buying ?
Im not at the moment, but I was curious what others thought about them.

Greetings all,Interested in WS ...or equal Beard model... Can any of you comment on bass response and projection of WS Ickes model ?

El Dobro - Posted - 08/05/2008: 08:12:16
The RI my friend has plays very close to the Original 'horns. Lots of response over the whole range.
dpete210 - Posted - 08/05/2008: 09:21:08
I've only heard one WS in person, but have listened to sound clips on the internet, and I almost bought a Wechter-Scheerhorn from a fellow on the banjo hangout based on hearing my friend's. I missed out on the deal because I waited too long to commit to buying it. It was Christmas eve when I decided to go for it, but I didn't want to bother the owner on Christmas, so contacted him the day after Christmas Day. He sold it on Christmas Day. But it turned out good for me because I bought a Gann curly maple. I compared it my friend's WS and while the Gann has a bit different sound I found out my Gann is a fine reso. I realized that from the first time played it, but was just surprised when I heard them together. I believe Mr. Gann helps set up the WS models, but don't quote me on that. The WS resos, in my opinion are a lot of reso for the money. Both the WS models and Gold Tone Beard models are winners, good quality for the price. I can't compare them to the higher end resos as I've never played them. I don't know if I dare because I'd probably want to get one and I'm starting to run out of room for my instrument collection.
Any day is a good day to play music, and today is a good day.

I have the maple bodied job (the older series with f-hole) with a Schertler Basik. I like the instrument a great deal. It almost approximates that sort of Scheerhorn "honk" - and it's very loud. Its other upside is that it's a fair bit lighter than any of my other resonator guitars, making it a good choice for those loooong jobs. The pickup, by the way, isn't all that great but gets the job done when it's necessary.

Mitch, does your WS Elite has the bent back like the regular 'horns?
MitchC - Posted - 08/05/2008: 19:12:14
You mean is the back arched ? Yes it is...
Here's the complete specs on it:
Tim Scheerhorn personally installed the hardware & set it up with his new cone, which he spins in his shop. The new cone has much better bass & midrange response than a Quarterman or standard Wechter cone, with no loss of treble response. It has increased volume & sustain, as well. This model also includes a #14 spider bridge & Tim’s newly designed coverplate with removable handrest, which makes adjustments much easier. Both Abe & Tim say these are by far the best Elites that have been made. It also has some perfectly bookmatched, killer Maple.
SPECS:
Finish: New Hand Stained Sunburst Finish
Top: Solid Flame Maple
Back & Sides: Solid Flame Maple
Neck: Tapered Maple With Center Stripe
Peghead: Flame Maple With MOP Inlay
Fingerboard: 12/19 Fret Ebony With Steel (not flush) Fret Markers & Dot Inlay

Setup: Personally Set Up By Tim Scheerhorn
Scheerhorn Cone: Handspun By Tim Scheerhorn
Bridge: Cast Aluminum #14 Spider

Saddles: Hard Maple With Proprietary Scheerhorn Ebonix Caps
Internal Construction: Proprietary Scheerhorn Soundposts & Internal Baffle

Where did you get the W/S L body? Elderly? I saw one on Ebay, did you get it there? I'm thinking about one and am curious. The finish looks great

Steve,
Check out the one at Elderly... it's a "plain jane" standard production version. Mine has many more upgraded appointments, Tim's cone, setup, gorgeous flame maple (on headstock also), MOP inlay in headstock etc.
I put a link to an eBAY auction in a few posts back. Email the guy. He will take a couple hundred less than listed I'm sure.
I LOVE mine !

Actually, I'm really enjoying the W/S Elite. It's as close to a real horn as I've heard. It looks, feels, and most important, sounds great.... (I'd still like one of your horns though !)
MitchC - Posted - 08/07/2008: 18:32:58
Hey, you guys with the W/S 6510's and Rob Ickes etc, is the stock cone, spider etc good, or did any of you upgrade parts ? Just curious....
LiamR - Posted - 08/08/2008: 02:23:39
The stock cone is actually not at all bad. Not quite as good as a well set up Quarterman but it is vastly superior to some. The spider isn't great, and upgrading to a Q or 'Horn may mean a new spider.
I've been tempted to upgrade those parts, but think carefully because:
The spider has EBONEX (Tim Scheerhorn's synthetic ebony) capped bridge inserts. These in my opinion are really 70% of what makes the Wechters so good. The tapered back and internal baffle of course help as well.

OK so the W/S doesnt have an American cone and Spider? I was under the impression it did.
Does the replacement cone need to be a 10 9/16 or a 10 1/2 like most imports?
Brian
BDC1 - Posted - 08/10/2008: 09:38:02
I should read this thread alittle better, ok I see they have a wechter cone and spider.
MitchC - Posted - 08/11/2008: 19:28:28
I think they sound good whatever is in there ! Play it the way it comes for awhile before deciding it could be better ?
Dave - Posted - 08/13/2008: 21:06:55
I have a W/S 6524R and although it doesn't sound as good as the Rob Ikes model, it still sounds pretty darn good compared to anything else I tried in it's price range.
