Are Quarterman cones still being spun? I went to Blue Note Woodworks site and found the QD-1 was out of stock. Nobody else seems to have any for sale so I didn’t know if these are out of production or, if not, where to buy them. Anybody know?

Thanks!

Jim, don't just rely on the Blue Note site,  give Rob a call - he's a good guy.

He's one of a small exclusive club  in the Reso world who actually knows John Quarterman personally. John is around 80 but according  to Rob, he has no plans on retiring. But at one point last year he had some equipment problems, and he may be a victim of  the supply chain shortages.

Check out my post in the thread below from last August.

If you watch the video of Mike Repogle spinning his cones, in credits at the end, it says he spins cones for both Beard and Scheerhorn, amongst a slew of others. I ways always under the assumption that both Paul and Tim spun there own cones.
I wonder if Repogle spins the cones for National and thus is spinning cones for the National Scheerhorn’s, now that Tim has stepped back from building. He must be spinning cones as good as anyone considering the training he had.

Mike Replogle may have helped Tim and Paul by spinning or helping them to manufacture cones for them at some point, but I know that Paul does spin many, if not all, of his own cones. I was able to see part of the process of Paul spinning one of his older Beard cones when I visited his shop several years ago. If I remember correctly, Paul doesn’t let anyone observe the making of a Legend cone. Howard Parker may be able to drop in a let us know if that’s true or not.

If I remember correctly, the video of Mike Replogle spinning cones for Beard and Scheerhorn is pretty old. Tim came out with his cone ballpark 13-14 years ago. He installed one in my Clinesmith and tweaked the setup at ResoSummit 2010 in Nashville. I also  took his Sunday morning setup class and he demoed the difference in sustain between the Quarterman and his newish cone. Definitely more sustain with the 'horn cone.

I did a search for a video of Tim spinning one of his cones, but I came up empty. I could swear that there is one out there and I want to say that Greg Booth shot the video in Tim's shop. Maybe Greg will see this and he can fill us in.

I was going to start a separate thread regarding the following, and maybe I still will depending on any information someone supplies, or lack thereof.

Since Tim has come up in this thread, I was curious if one could still order one of his cones. I have a Beard Legend cone in my main guitar which is great - but I love the sound of a Scheerhorn cone as well. Since Tim is in Michigan, Elderly has been a longtime supplier of Scheerhorn products. National has put 'horn cones into the Nati-horns since the beginning of the business relationship.

If you google Scheerhorn resonator cone from Elderly, you will find a listing - but it's obsolete. You will not find it on the Elderly site - it has been deleted.

I called Elderly Thursday morning, I guess my curiosity was inspired by this thread started by Jim regarding Quarterman cones. I got a very friendly and helpful sales rep - we even talked some football (Go Niners!). He didn't officially know the story, but he's thinking that 'horn cones are history.

Most of us are aware that Tim is in his mid 70s now and he had a triple bypass operation in 2021.

Unless Quarterman cones show up again, it's beginning to look like what had been four companies spinning quality spider bridge resonator  American reso cones could be reduced to two - Beard and Replogle.

Hey Mark,

I had a similar experience with Elderly regarding the Scheerhorn composited tipped maple inserts. One day they were on the Elderly site listed as “out of stock”, but with a way to request an email notification when the item became available again. A few weeks (maybe even a month later), I got an email notification that they were back in stock, but when I got around to checking the store a few days later - gone! Not only were they evidently sold out, but the listing for the maple inserts was totally missing from the site. Since this was after Tim’s heart attack, I did the same thing and called to find out an estimated date when they might be back in stock and I got the same rather vague comment that they looked like they weren’t going to be getting any more in stock. A few months later, they popped back up on the site. I said all that to say this - I believe the cones will be back in stock on Elderly. I think it will be like the bridge inserts. But…I could always be wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time! ??
