YES. Absolutely. As you can see from the picture mine was sans pick-up but I had a Baggs M-1 installed. I don't always plug in. IMO These have the same volume as most acoustic guitars.

No, not quite as loud as a resonator. I don't know though, the BC is pretty close. Tony hit it on the sustain and dynamics. The sound traveling up and down the neck is beyond description. I have sustain that goes on and on and on. Hell sometimes when I end a song I palm mute the strings to stop it. roflmao I have said it's the sweetest sound this side of heaven.

I only put pickups in mine because the folks I was playing with wanted to plug in for performances. We rehearsed unplugged though, and the Weissenborn held its own with a 6 string, a twelve string, upright bass, percussion and 4 vocalists. Granted, I had to dig in sometimes, but the instruments were up to the task.

Hi Chris ,, thanks ,, for Amazing Grace I used a Mic to record it. The Weissenborn is an old circa 1920's Hilo and does have quite a round deeper sound than some of the other newer instruments ,, may be due to its age and particular characteristics of the instrument
As far as the difference in volume with resonators, I have played a number of concerts recently which has been telling as far as volume difference between the instruments.. these were solo performances
In a non amplified acoustic concert room - a very nice space with about 80- 100 people The Resonator ( a goldtone PBSM ) really punches through and fills the room,, but the Hilo was a lower volume ,, and a producer colleague described it as a studio recording instrument.. I think more noticeable when playing one piece immediately after the other
When using a mic there is definitely a difference with the Hilo needing to be set for an acoustic guitar level setting and the resonator using a different mic as it does have the extra cut and punch.. Personally I think I will tend to keep persuing micing instruments rather than using pickups tho,, seems to bring out the more natural sound characteristics
On another note -- which I think I will add as a separate thread,, produced a concert last week ,, 4 different act playing to a full room and used only one large diaphragm Valve mic to recreate the performance for the PA and a feed for the video feed.. took the artists thru a training exercise about using the physical space to balance the performance around the mic,, spectacular results .... ok promise - another tread for this one

Interesting comments, Tony. Thanks. The more I listen to these instruments, the more I'm drawn to the more mellow/deeper sounds. I just don't think the brighter toned instruments are as satisfying to my psyche. It may well be a long time until I could afford an instrument whose sound has mellowed suffieciently with age.

Hi, Silly Moustache in the UK here. I play in three different duos - and in one I play dobro, mandolin, guitar and a Weissenborn replica hand made by a local luthier - who specialises in them. Mine is an all mahogany - standard sized instrument.
My dobro is a Gibson Dobro but highly modded with Beard cone, spider, and other parts. - it is loud. The Weissy is less loud but carries well and so as far as the audience is concerned there is no issue with volume. I should say that we use no amplification apart from a large condenser mic set between the two of us. Works very well for our small gigs. Of course the approach to the Weissy is different to the dobro.
