Just got myself a Beard 8 string & got it setup in their shop for C6th with the D on top like MA. Don't have any previous experience with this, so it's going to be a steep learning curve for a little while. How about you guys?

Welcome Daryl - I've been a little gunshy of picking up an 8 string but I think the Beard Goldtone would be a great choice. I'm used to working with 10 strings on my pedal steel but for some reason those two extra strings on a reso make me a little nervous. I still have a lot to learn on the 6 string. I'd really like to get your impressions on the 8 string. I saw your part of the 8 string thread a while back but would like to hear more if you've made any progress. Is it difficult to adjust after playing 6 strings? Of course I'm assuming you played 6 before you got your 8. Let me know if I got that backwards.

Hey Daryl Glad you joined. The Beard MA8 is a really nice guitar. I briefly had the opportunity to play one when I stopped in at the Beard shop in Maryland. It has a nice resonant sound, and the bass strings don't lose much as you move up the neck. If you're going from a 6 to 8 string guitar, I found the biggest adjustment was getting used to the tighter string spacing. The spacing is very much like a pedal steel ( Dan knows what I'm talking about). My 8 string is a 1980 OMI Dobro which had even tighter spacing. My solution was to put a nut that extended about 1/16" past each edge of the neck. This allowed me to have the 1st and 8th string line up over the edge of the neck which approximated the Beard spacing. The tabs available for Auldridge's 8 string tuning would be very helpful in getting a good start.

Joyfulnoise - I have a 6 string lap steel, too. Tuned to C6. Gotta love that sound. I've been working on a couple of swing tunes to put up in the MP3 jukebox here but haven't got all the kinks worked out yet.
Jack - Sounds like you've got a good start on your transcriptions. Can't wait to have some more material to work on.
So does anybody have a favorite swing tune? Maybe one you are working on? Greg Booths arrangement of Panhandle Rag got me started playing reso a few years ago and lately I've been working on his arrangement of Little Rock Getaway.One of my favorite swing albums is called "Hillbilly Jazz" with a whole load of great old players on a two album set. I'd like to know where your interest lies.

Actually, I think it'll all work out okay in the end, but it looks like it's going to be a fun journey. It's going to be a bit of a task initially learning the fingerboard etc.
As Mike A say's in his "An Introduction to the Eight String Resophonic Steel Guitar" DVD "...it's really nothing but playing the scales and knowing where the positions are..." This must be the tabs you were referencing to above, Jack?...and you're right, they'll be helpful in making a good start.
Mike makes a point of being economical with your playing, that is, rather than shooting higher up the neck for maybe a 7 chord, play it an octave lower and in the same position or, area if you will, of the fingerboard you started out in with the 1 chord. Makes a lot of sense and keeps movement to a minimum, sounds better and cleaner too.
Dan - you are correct in that I have come to the 8 from 6 string reso in high G tuning ie bit of bluegrass, bit of old time and some more bits of Hawaiian etc and a steep learning curve - been at it for about 2 and a 1/2 years.
Love Greg Booths reso playing - do I remember correctly in that he has a background in pedal steel?
Favourite swing tune at present would be "Sweet Georgia Brown"...would love to be able to get that down pat in C6th...and with the D on top ;-)
Anybody got any tab or tips for C6 they're willing to share?

This tuning would more rightly be called C6+9 or C6 add 9. Presently I'm doing some transcriptions for Dan ( "Caravan" and "Georgia on my Mind"). I do have the sheet music for Sweet Georgia Brown done in G, which should lay out well on the C6 tuning or G6 tuning. The tabs for the above songs are for G6 6 string tuned (low to high) EBDGBD, Gregg Booth's tuning of choice. Greg does have a pedal steel background, like Dan and myself.
My 8 string reso is basically an open G tuning on the lower six strings, with an A on the second and a C on the first, and similar to the E9 pedal steel tuning , the top two strings are tuned lower than the third string. Let me know whcih guitar you would like tabs for, 6 or 8 string, and I'll see if I can help.

After I finish the two arrangements I mentioned earlier, I'll work on one in G6 (EBDGBD) for "Sweet Georgia Brown". I checked out the info about block chord style playing you referenced, and realized that what I was doing , by taking piano sheet music and transcribing it to the steel, was very similar in that I added harmony notes under the melody notes where able ( alomost like chord melodies).
Greg's renditions are really nice. My version that I'm in the middle of now, I'm sure will be a little different - hopefully as good. I gues after these 6 string arrangements I should do some for 8 string, albeit my 8 string tuning is not the usual.

Hi all, don't have an 8 string reso yet but have a couple of 8 string lap steels. I've had a National triple neck since the 70's. Really only use one neck with a modification of the high G C6th tuning. Low to high CEFGACEG. I've got another neck tuned to a 3rd high 6th and the other to a 1st high 6th but I play that odd C6th the most.

I just ordered a Gold Tone 8 string that is set up with a G6 tuning and I want to tune it to C6 (high G) so it will be the same as my lap steel. Do you guys know of any issues with doing this? Thanks! Great group! Jim

Welcome Jim - I would make sure you use a C6 gauge set of strings on it. The heavier G or G6 gauge is a whole different stress load. You may have to have a set up man make some adjustments, too with a different set of strings you might have some buzzing issues. But if you think about it, the G6 tuning that comes with the Gold Tone shouldn't be that much of an adjustment. I'd at least give it a try for a couple of days before changing the set up. Have fun and send us some sound bytes.

Jim, if your buying from Beard they will more than likely set it up for you in C6 if you request it. They did with mine.
