Hi everyone! Loooove western swing, I have a Fender 1000 pedal steel, which I played in a rockabilly/swing band last year. I'm sitting in with them again in a couple of weeks using my reso. Of the 4 songs I'm sitting in on, I'm using GBDGBD on 2, but the other 2 need a C6 style tuning. I tried Bob Brozman's western swing tuning (DGDF#BD) tucked away in the back of his book for his excellent "Slide Guitar For Blues Vol 2" dvd, but that tuning didn't work well for me. I found that if I drop my Bs to Bb I get a Bb6 tuning (GBbDGBbD), which is perfect for what I need! Does anyone else use this tuning? What do you use?

I "play" western swing on a 6 string lap steel tuned to CEGACE and it sounds great......to me anyway. However, being that you have the 8 string Fender pedal guitar you may want to check out steelguitarforum.com to see how some of those folks would tune your Fender. Good luck! Hmmm. You got me thinkin'......I think I will drop my B's on my dobro and give that a whirl, just for fun..........I might learn something!!!!

I do use ACEGACEG on my PSG, and I do frequent the steel guitar forum! It's another great place full of nice folks to talk shop with. What I like about the GBbDGBbD tuning for reso is it's so close to standard bluegrass tuning that I can easily switch between songs on stage. Very convenient!

I dropped my B's on my dobro and gave it a strum on my dobro. My choice for 6 strings is still CEGACE. I think it sounds much brighter. But that aint to say that your tuning can't work! How is your Fender 1000 tuned?

A G minor tuning? I've never done that, but now I want to try it too. Thanks for posting.
Cindy Cashdollar's C6 tuning is another I'd like to try, but it will require lighter string gauges: EGACEG. Your variation is much easier to shift into, which is another another plus.

I flat my b's but just a bit. maybe just 1 cent. Gives the Dobro a great bluesy sound. I also play lap steel but stick pretty close to the C6 tuning.

My band plays about 1/3 Western Swing, 1/3 Prohibition era to WWII era swing and gypsy jazz, and the rest a combination of bluegrass, blues and classic rock--all done bluegrass style.
I've found that tuning the 4th string D up to E works very well for me. While I miss having the D and E together somewhat, when it's in the mix of the other instrument, I don't really miss it that much. It enables me to tune back and forth quickly. I also do some songs with the low string dropped to E, so I these transitions are easy to do on the fly. I do think I will eventually get a 7 or 8 string dedicated to swing, but I am having a lot of fun as is. I do wish I had a B or C6 tuning, but everyone tells me it puts too much pressure on the cone.
