More About Me
I have been playing music since about 13 years old. I started on ukulele and progressed through guitar, banjo, lap steel and pedal steel guitar. Most of my ancestors and family members were old-time musicians playing piano, guitar, lap steel and fiddle. I learned the basics from my family. I started attending Bill Grant's Bluegrass Festival in Hugo Oklahoma in 1976. I started entering the senior banjo contest each year and won 1st place in 1979. I had previously won 1st place at the First Annual Bluegrass Festival at East Texas State University in 1976. At the time, I was playing lap steel (and eventually pedal steel) in a local band. In 1980, I met Jeff Newman at a seminar in Dallas. I subsequently traveled to Nashville to study pedal steel guitar at Jeffran College. That is where I actually learned music theory. Jeff was a master teacher. In 1983 and 1984, Jeff partnered with Buddy Emmons to teach C6th Steel Guitar and I was at both classes. Over the years since then I have played with several bands, mostly playing banjo and pedal steel. During those years I was constantly asked to teach music (mostly banjo). When I finally retired in 2014, I established my music business. Since then I have been teaching children, adults and senior adults how to play banjo, pedal steel, dobro, rhythm guitar and bass. I use various methods including chord charts ( including nashville numbers), tablature and raw hands-on demonstration. I believe that actually sitting down with an experienced musician can provided the best learning experience.
