It's funny to look back at my blog from 3 years ago. This time I'm sticking to it!
Got between 7-10 songs in my repertoire now. Nothing too flashy. Working on Troy B lessons and arrangements, Jay Buckey arrangements and the Janet Davis book. I practice a good 1 1/2 hours a day. Had a positive experience at a jam session and am going to another this weekend.
Trying to get the concept of being a dobro player into my head. Picking out melody lines and hearing chord progressions are no problem for me. Harmonizing simple songs I think I've got that concept down. Using rolls and licks in an arrangement is something I'm going to have to learn to do. Not up to speed yet.
I memorized Jay Buckey's arrangement of Shady Grove the one with all the rolls in it. I can play it but do I really know what I'm doing? I'm mimicking something someone else put on paper.
Working on Jay's arrangement of Rollin' in my sweet babies arms. Got the melody and harmonized versions done. Now working on the fancy version with rolls.
Same thing with Troy B's version of "Banks of the Ohio" Same thing. Got the melody and harmonized version done now working on The fancy version with the syncopation and riffs.
In the Janet Davis book I'm struggling with her arrangement of "Blackberry Blossom" I'm practicing it at 60bpm if that tells you anything.
Before I practice songs I warm up with rolls, pick blocking, hammer ons and pull of riffs, working on learning the fretboard and back up riffs (all fromTroy B lessons)

You have a structured approach. That's good!
I don't. Without much capacity for memorizing, I just sort of bang away and see what I discover. Works for me, but I don't recommend it for everyone.

As far as songs go, I have to memorize, I read music and tab but no way could I play dobro while staring at music/tab.
