Hey Reso friends. Jack Stepick...fine Luther from Newton Nj and I have been "jaw boning" about the "mechanics" of Resophonic Guitars and Weissenborns for awhile...I guess every "player" and builder continues to look for improvements in this instrument. Jack led me to a post from 2017, where a number of Dobro Folks tossed ideas and experiences around..regarding "spiders". I am sure John Quarterman did a lot of testing of designs of cones and spiders...Jack and I agree the bottom line question is " can you play the instrument" regardless of the name on the guitar head plate or the differences of the internal hardware? It makes me think of when I went to Nazareth Music in Nazareth PA...shopping for a Martin D28. Had the opportunity to test-drive several D28s...all different, but not a bad one in the bunch each one was great but each had a slightly different "voice". I think of some of Dick Blattenberger's Resophonics all quite different but all with good sound..and Earl Osenbach had an "old" Regal...round neck with a "lugged cone"....the guitar body and inside were "beat up" ...but the guitar sounded wonderful...back to the invisible magic of finding the "right sound"... the improved ultimate sounding Dobro. Lets face it... they all sound good if the player can make it sing.
A little commercial plug...Jack Stepick built a custom made "short scale Dobro" for me. Total black walnut with some cherry added..fret board and head plate. The look and sound of this wonderful guitar compares to the much more expensive Dobro being made. Jack Stepick, like Raymond Fairchild have been well kept secrets...Ray died in 2023,,,but Jack is still designing his architectural cabinet making skills into his "guitars". Give him a call...Jack is a "good neighbor" to everyone.
Tom
