We are shocked and deeply saddened with this news our friend and fellow Dobro player, has died several days ago.
I read Kathleen, Slideman’s daughter’s, post on Face Book on Monday and I am still trying to digest this sad news.
Slideman visited us at our home near the end of September. He and I went and visited Raymond Fairchild, another best friend and Dobro Luthier and builder of other instruments.
We wore masks and respected the Covid-19 recommendations during our visits.
Slideman and Jan & I have been friends for quite a few years. I met him at our neighbor’s home, many years ago during what our neighbors call Sullyfest....a Bluegrass Festival that Joe & Dotti Sullivan have at their home each year. That was the first time I saw Slideman playing a Dobro.
Truth is “Slideman” was the inspiration for me to get a Dobro and see if I could learn to play it.
Slideman was one of the most respected and loved persons that came to the Dobro Meetings... held at St Paul UMC our Church in Hellertown, PA.
I believe Slideman was one of our Country’s most knowledgeable people regarding the Dobro and other similar instruments.
Everyone always looked forward to hearing him teach us and “show & tell”. He always had “hand out” information for everyone and exhibits.
I always enjoyed his playing and his lectures and his sense of humor and valued our friendship.
I know everyone that attended our Dobro Meetings will miss "The Slideman".
Tom & Jan
