Update from February 6th 2015...

Posted by resotom on Saturday, February 7, 2015

I have to add that the performance on this date was very well attended. I was asked to play back-up for the award winning singer/songwriter Nora Collins ( . Her material consists of all original songs she wrote and she is basically a solo artist doing what I would call folk/country tunes. Most of the time she uses a capo and plays in odd-ball keys with lots of minors injected in her work. For me, the challenge was to decipher on stage instantly when the chord changes would occur. Her guitar work consists of strumming with a beat as I would describe it. I used a Shure SM-81 directional mike which when dialed in at the board was sufficient to carry the reso throughout the entire room. Her guitar was plugged into the board as well as her vocal mike. I found this experience a very pleasurable one in that I was to be able to transpose instantly from one key to another without no difficulty. Having played dobro for 65 years and all my experience in doing so was a great help to augment this vocalists songs. I am sure I will be asked to accompany her in future shows and look forward to the challenges ahead.

I will add this to the last post here...I very seldom use a capo.

The reso I used for this show ( I have 4 of them ), was the 2014 Appalachian curly maple (Amber) with the Legend cone and the #14 spider with a poinsettia cover plate. You can see this on my Facebook page if you need to...

My cones like the 016-018-022P-032W-038W-048W strings set up . Brilliant highs and great lows without readjusting the cone screw on the spider. All four resos sound as good as I expected they would with this combination. No real loss in volume either.
