Resonator guitar #3..

Posted by resotom on Saturday, April 4, 2015

The last two blogs were about the two resos I have owned since 1953 and 1982 respectively. So.. in 2012, I was still looking for the sound of a model 27 Dobro and decided to have Mark Tayloy of Crafters of Tennessee build me one. I has heard Tut Taylor's guitars were built in the image of the model 27 so Mark started my guitar in March of 2012. It took quite awhile to get it finished because of the nitro celulouse used in the finish which deteriorated quickly. This was not of Mark's fault because other guitar manufacturers were having the same problem. The guitar is made of dark Honduran mahogany throughout and has a custom spun cone installed and features a parallogram holed sound well. It is just beautiful with a sound like no other ! I recieved this reso in July of 2012 but sent it back to have another cone installed. The new cone responds very well . It has a very rich sound and I have installed a Lace Ultra Slim pick up on it so as not to disturb anything inside of the resonator. Mark felt that it was best to do this so I also purchased a Fishman JD Aura pedal to get the desired mic settings I use for this guitar. The pick up is used only on stage since I usually mic it through the board at the studio. I use a Dunlop Long Dawg or a Ron Tipton slide along with ProPik double wrapped stainless picks and Zookies L-20 thumb picks. The strings are either D'Addario EJ-42 strings or a custom set ( 016P-018P-022P-030W-036W-048W). The top three are nickel and the bottom three are phosphor bronze.I have used this reso along with my others on stage, radio, television and recordings .My next blog will feature my newest guitar built in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia by Tom Warner.
