Tom Schmidt, a resonator guitar player for over six decades,has appeared on several Grand Ole Opry package shows including: Hank Williams Jr., Conway Twitty, Merle Travis, Cal Smith, Gene Watson, Marvin Rainwater, Mikey Gilley, Barbara Fairchild, Webb Pierce, Bill Monroe, Bobby Bare, Asleep At The Wheel, among others and has recorded on many Midwestern labels as well as performing on stage, radio and television. More recently (2015), he has played with Nashville recording artists Nora Collins, Holly Steele, Chad Wilson, Josh Thompson and. Jim Melvin. He specializes in over lays (over-dubs), in the studio which he learned from Les Paul in 1952. He was first attracted to the sound of the resonator guitar in 1949 and purchased his first Dobro/Regal resonator guitar in 1953 in a pawn shop in Milwaukee for $20.00 cash. He still uses this guitar today along with four other resonator guitars custom built for him to use on stage and in the studio with each one providing a totally unique sound. He is a member of the Reso Players Union and has many friends around the world, at last count on his homepage on the Hangout web-site, 296 !! In addition to that, he has played pedal steel guitar since 1958 and performed with two Opry steel guitars which have since been taken back to Nashville in exchange for a unique pedal resonator guitar in 2016. The "General Jackson" was built for him by Harry and David Jackson, the descendants of the legendary "Shot" Jackson of Grand Ole Opry fame and owners of the Jackson Steel Guitar Company.
